While Stan Lee has done plenty of cameos over the years, he has never done any substantial acting roles, so perhaps that is why Sam Raimi did not consider him for J. Jonah Jameson. Lee was also beloved by fans for how kind and wholesome he was, so perhaps Raimi doubted his ability to play a character as loud and irritable as Jameson is known to be. However, Simmons also shared that Stan Lee made it clear he had no hard feelings over losing out on the part.
“‘But having seen you do it, I thought you were fantastic,’” Simmons said Lee later told him. “And it was very, very nice things, which obviously coming from the man was a great, great compliment.” So while Stan Lee may have been disappointed he did not get to play the part, it sounds like he concedes that J.K. Simmons was the right actor to play J. Jonah Jameson.
