During the Anime Expo that ran from July 4 to July 7, the creators of Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers released more information about the anime based on the Guilty Gear video game franchise. While the anime had already been announced, the anime panel revealed more information in the form of a teaser trailer, announcing the voice actors, and explaining the plot of the anime.

Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers is set to release in 2025.

One of the bits of information released was a teaser trailer. Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers’ trailer offered up some examples of the animation style and showcased some of the fight scenes fans will see throughout the season.

Interestingly, the team behind the animation chose to go with a 3D animation style for Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers. While there are some animes out there starting to embrace 3D animation or CGI, many still choose to go with more of a 2D style, even if they blend in some other elements, as seen with anime like Demon Slayer

However, the team stands behind their decision to go with 3D for Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers. Because of their choice, the animation looks very similar to the animation you’d find in the cutscenes of Guilty Gear Strive

“After the decline of the once robust fields of science and technology … Humanity creates forbidden biological weapons: Gears. Those Gears eventually stand against humanity in a rebellion … Sin Kiske, the child of a human and a Gear, heads to his father Ky and mother Dizzy’s wedding ceremony. Their wedding breaks the ultimate taboo: a union between a human and a Gear. When suddenly, a mysterious girl appears.”

This is actually a pretty interesting way to tie Guilty Gear Strive and Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers. While it may alienate some new fans, it may entice fans of the game to watch the show even more. And, as Trigun Stampede proved, 3D animation isn’t enough to turn away all potential fans.

The team briefly thought about going the more traditional and favorable 2D animation route for Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers. However, Seiji Mizushima (Fullmetal Alchemist), the associate producer, introduced the rest of the team to Sanzigen (BanG Dream! It’s MyGO!!!!!), an animation team known for their 3D animation and solid shading, and they felt comfortable going in more the 3D direction.

The voice actors for Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers were confirmed to be the original voice actors from the video game Guilty Gear Strive.

The trailer also hinted at some of the story, which is focused on the gears in the series. The gears are an important part of the lore and are often used as major weapons of war. Not everyone likes the addition of gears in the world, and the anime seems to focus on a big battle between those who use the gears and those looking to stop their spread.

The trailer shows one scene in particular where Sol Badguy and the mysterious girl team up against Sin Kiske, likely about the gears. Though the compilation of scenes in Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers’ trailer totals less than a minute there are quite a lot of interesting scenes to see. For anyone interested, it’s worth watching the video for yourself to fully grasp every detail it reveals.

A few more topics were revealed during the weekend. The voice actors for Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers were confirmed to be the original voice actors from the video game Guilty Gear Strive.

This includes Miyazaki Issei (Cardcaptor Sakura) as the voice of Sin Kiske and Jouji Nakata (Jujutsu Kaisen) as the voice of Sol Badguy. As for the new character, the mysterious Unika, Yui Ishikawa (The Saint’s Magic Power is Omnipotent) is set to play her.

The series will be directed by Shigeru Morikawa (After War Gundam X). Though there are original characters in the anime, all are created by Daisuke Ishiwatari, who was the creator of the Guilty Gear franchise.

Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers will come out sometime in 2025, though the precise date hasn’t yet been announced.
